Alphabet for Paramount/Plaza cinema sign system, designer Ray Carpenter

Cinema marquee sign system for Paramount/Plaza cinema

1968-1969

The architects Verity & Beverley got us involved in a complete sign system for the redesigned Paramount and Plaza cinemas in Lower Regent Street, including one of the biggest signs we‘ve done. For this we designed an alphabet to match the Paramount and Plaza logotypes, the letters to be mounted on variable widths of clear perspex clipped between horizontal runners. The clients stuck dutifully to our style for a couple of years, then cut loose and ended up with a most godawful mess – just like every other cinema marquee sign in the west end.
