Project work on the Nuffield Secondary Mathematics programme extended over a three-year period. The team at Nuffield were dedicated to the principle of testing out in the field any proposed publications – more than once if need be – and we had to accept the verdict of the secondary school students and teachers on our designs. It was a bracing corrective to some of the established assumptions graphic designers hold dear. Having weathered that with a fair grace we were less disposed to accommodate ourselves to the publishers’ views on the appropriate design constraints, and we decided to end our consultancy with them for that reason.
